Privateers

I have the utmost respect and honor for the privateers you see and hear about racing at the local and highest levels. Total dedication for no/little pay or glory.

From the Norba Marathon Championships via Velo News:

After two laps Brown and Henry had a minute on third-place Michael McCalla, who - in the best traditions of mountain-bike racing - was riding without sponsors or support, camped in his van before the race, and still finished fourth.

I wonder how they motivate themselves? I could use some of that mind power.
